Looking back and looking ahead: 2012 and 2013

IMG_1207It’s that time of the year when people are reflecting on the past year and ahead to the New Year.  2012 was a bit of a blur and I can’t believe it’s already over.  It was a year of pregnancies and new babies.  I saw more pregnant women this year than the previous 3 or 4 years combined.  I loved helping all of these moms to be healthier and not just get out of pain.

It was also a year of continuing evolution in insurance and healthcare costs.  Copays were the highest I’d ever seen in 15 years of practice with some over $50.  Deductibles have been rising too with many over $2000/year.  Reimbursement (what I’m paid by insurance companies) has continued to go down.  I’m paid less for doing the same work with more paperwork than I was 10 years ago.  As patients’ out of pocket expenses have gotten higher, I’ve seen a shift in their perspective from being interested in pain relief to more interested in being “well” and staying “well.”  I see that trend continuing as government gets more involved in our healthcare. We’ve had staffing changes with Annabel graduating from Texas Tech and moving away and Amanda relocating with her husband’s new job opportunity.  Things are looking great and I have competent new faces in the office that will be a great asset to our business and patient care.

My goals for the next year are:

1.  See more families and children.  I love treating families and it gives me great satisfaction in my career.

2.  Increase my knowledge in treating pediatric patients and also with the impulse Adjuster low force technique.

3.  Expand the service of Helton Chiropractic in west Texas by opening additional clinics in underserved areas.

4.  Expand the wellness portion of my clinic to help patients function at their peak potential and live life.

I love and appreciate all of the doctors, staff, and patients of Helton Chiropractic.  My practice far exceeds my wildest dreams while in chiropractic school 15 years ago.  I want to continue to serve the people of west Texas AND eastern New Mexico to the best of my ability.
